To most people, there�s no difference between Web3 and Web 3.0. While the two may seem like the same thing from a distance, they are actually two distinct terms that represent two separate worlds. However, there are attempts to merge the two worlds, further blurring the line between Web3 and Web 3.0. What does Web3 stand for?

The term web3 started cropping up in 2014 after Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood described a futuristic web that�s powered by blockchain technology. According to Wood, this type of web is decentralized and doesn�t have a single controlling entity, thus making it more transparent and secure than the conventional World Wide Web.

Web3 leans heavily on decentralization, which is powered by an interconnected network of millions, if not billions, of computing devices scattered around the world. Web3 also employs virtual currencies like ETH, BTC, and SOL to pay for products and services inside the ecosystem. Cryptocurrencies are also used to move value across the Web3 world.

What is Web 3.0?

Web3.0 is the next iteration of the World Wide Web. The term first surfaced in 2006 after O�Reilly Media�s founder, Tim O�Reilly, said he looked forward to a more responsive and interconnected web, also known as the semantic web. Over the years, the World Wide Web has gone through different phases, with each phase making the web more responsive, and O�Reilly considered Web 3.0 a natural evolution of the semantic web.

For context, the early World Wide Web was known as Web 1.0, and it was characterized by limited user interaction. It was also known as a static web since it largely allowed users to only view information posted on websites. Later in the early 2000s, Web 1.0 graduated to Web 2.0.

The graduation brought more interaction between websites and users. During this era, posting information on the web was no longer a privilege of businesses and experts; Common web users could easily post information. Web 2.0 came with social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, and video-sharing platforms like YouTube.

Web 2.0 also birthed user-generated blogs, content, and online communities. Web 2.0 invited Web 3.0, which enhanced the interaction between websites and their users to include machines. This has led to the proliferation of artificial intelligence, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and other technologies meant to further ease the interaction.

The difference between Web3 and Web 3.0

Web3 emphasizes on decentralization while Web 3.0 concentrates on increasing the interaction between web-based data and its users.

  • Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) - These are decentralized organizations that govern blockchain-based projects. An example is Polkadot DAO.

  • Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) - These are blockchain-powered tokens that show ownership of an object or represent a piece of art on a blockchain. Popular NFTs include Bored Ape Yatch Club (BAYC), CryptoPunks, and Pudgy Penguns.

Web 3.0 Applications

  • Personal or voice assistants - Think of the likes of Alexa and Siri. These assistants offer help to users by answering questions and responding to commands.

  • Intelligent search engines - These types of search engines are able to �know� what a user intends to search for, even without inputting the exact search words or phrases. In other words, it understands search contexts.

  • Personalization engines - These are engines used by the likes of Netflix to recommend shows and products based on previous behaviour.

Conclusion

Although the difference between Web3 and Web 3.0 is evident from their applications, the line between the two is becoming blurry each day as more entities strive to interface the two worlds. The main difference between Web3 and Web 3.0 is that Web3 goes all in on decentralization and censorship-resistance while Web 3.0 seeks to improve interaction between web-based data and users, whether centralized or not.
