Bitcoin mining uses a lot of electricity. That�s no secret. In 2025 alone, Bitcoin mining consumed around 150 terawatt-hours (TWh) of power, comparable to the energy usage of an entire country like Argentina. But what often gets overlooked is that most of that power turns into something else: heat.

Normally, this heat is treated as waste. Fans and cooling systems work around the clock to push it away from sensitive machines. But a growing number of miners are flipping the script, reusing this "waste heat" for useful applications like heating buildings, greenhouses, and even public infrastructure.

What is heat reuse in mining?

When ASIC miners run, nearly 100% of the electricity they use becomes heat. In most setups, this heat is pushed out through fans and vented outside the building. But with the right equipment, miners can recover that heat and send it somewhere useful.

This can be done in two main ways:

  • Air-based systems: Redirecting warm air through ducts into buildings or warehouses.
  • Liquid-based systems: Using immersion cooling or water heat exchangers to circulate heated fluid to nearby applications.

In both cases, instead of wasting energy, miners are turning it into a second product: usable heat.

Real-world examples

Heat reuse is already happening in several countries. Some projects are small-scale, while others are being used to heat entire towns.

Finland

In early 2024, a district heating provider in Finland partnered with a mining company to heat homes using the excess heat from mining rigs. The system now warms buildings for over 11,000 residents and replaces fossil fuel-based heating in the process.

Canada

Vancouver-based MintGreen has built a name around heat recovery. In one of their projects, heat from their mining rigs is used to warm water in a public pool. In another, they�re working with commercial buildings to provide steady, low-cost heating year-round.

Sweden

A mining facility in Sweden rerouted its heat to support an adjacent greenhouse. The result? Year-round crop production in a cold climate, powered in part by Bitcoin mining.

Why it matters

Reusing heat isn�t just good PR. It also makes financial sense.

  • Reduced cooling costs: By redirecting heat instead of venting it, miners spend less on fans and HVAC systems.
  • New revenue streams: In some partnerships, mining companies are paid for their heat, just like a utility.
  • Regulatory benefits: Green mining operations are more attractive to local governments and easier to permit.

It�s also a strong counterargument to one of the most common critiques of Bitcoin mining: that it�s wasteful. When energy is used twice, first to secure the Bitcoin network and then to heat homes or grow food, it�s hard to call it a waste.

A path forward

Endless Mining is already focused on performance and uptime. But sustainability is quickly becoming just as important. As more miners look for ways to optimize costs and improve their environmental footprint, heat recovery presents a real opportunity.

In the future, we may see hosted mining units not just generating Bitcoin, but also helping nearby communities save on heating bills.
