One, they can be used to pick patterns in large amounts of data. Two, they can be used to predict the behaviour of physical systems depending on a set of instructions or data.

Quantum computers can be used in industries that deal with complex mathematical logics like chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and machine learning.

How is quantum technology a threat to Bitcoin?

Quantum technology threatens Bitcoin on one major front: private keys. A quantum computer handles tasks at astronomical speeds. As such, it can easily cycle through all possible outcomes to access a Bitcoin wallet.

It could also exploit weaknesses in the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) cryptography approach used by Bitcoin to secure BTC wallets. Developers creating Bitcoin-powered products are already making plans on how to make their products quantum-resistant.

How is quantum technology a blessing to Bitcoin?

Quantum technology isn�t all doom in the Bitcoin and cryptocurrency spaces. It also has its advantages. How, you may ask. Well, picture this. What happens when you lose the private key to your crypto wallet? What happens when you misplace your Ledger Nano X hardware crypto wallet? You guessed right: Losing your wallet means losing your digital wealth.

However, that can change with quantum technology. Quantum computers can sift through billions of wallet address variations to find your lost private key, thus helping you recover your virtual wealth.

According to analysts, more than 3.5 million Bitcoins are permanently lost due to errors such as forgotten passwords, misplaced computer hard drives, and lost hardware wallets.

Quantum computers may first attempt to recover private keys of early Bitcoin wallets using older versions of the pay-to-public-key (P2PK) format. This cryptographic format is considered to have some unfixable flaws. The flaws are unfixable because these formats are no longer used by Bitcoin wallets, and no one concentrates on providing upgrades.
